The Culture of the DRC
A tapestry of over 450 ethnic groups, the world's most vibrant African music scene, and a tradition of visual arts that has shaped global culture.
Kinshasa β A World Music Capital
Kinshasa ranks among the world's major music centres. In the 1950s, Kabesele Tshamala pioneered African Jazz and OK Jazz; in the 1960s, rumba and soukous spread continent-wide through artists like Papa Wemba and the Grand ZaΓ―ko Orchestra. Papa Wendo (1925β2008) laid the foundations of Congolese rumba, which blends Cuban merengue and West African highlife with local traditions.
Today's scene carries that legacy forward through artists such as Fally Ipupa, Lokua Kanza, and gospel performer Alain Moloto. Kinshasa hosts the Academy of Fine Arts (painting, sculpture, ceramics) and the National Institute of Arts (classical and traditional music, drama), alongside national museums in Kananga, Mbandaka, and Lubumbashi.
